Some Windows applications, like Notepad, continue to receive updates and new features even after years of use. However, others eventually become outdated. One such utility, the standard Windows Mail & Calendar app, is now approaching its retirement.
Transition to Outlook or Alternative Clients
According to an official Microsoft blog post, the Mail & Calendar app will no longer function after December 31 of this year. After that date, users won’t be able to send or receive emails through it, nor access the People service. To continue managing emails on Windows, users will need to transition to the Outlook application, which will take over Mail & Calendar’s functionality. Alternatively, users may choose a third-party email client to meet their needs.
Notifications for Users Until December 31
To help users prepare for the change, the Mail & Calendar app will display notifications alerting them to its upcoming shutdown. This notification will ensure that users have time to transfer their data and adapt to a new platform before the year’s end. Some reports suggest that the updated version of Outlook may feature built-in advertisements, a factor that could encourage some users to explore alternative email options, adds NIXsolutions.
