Meta Platforms has introduced new lens color options for its smart glasses, developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban. Alongside this, the company is expanding the availability of several advanced features. These include real-time speech translation, Instagram messaging and calling capabilities, and interaction with Meta’s AI assistant—even enabling the assistant to comment on what the user is currently seeing.
The real-time translation function was initially revealed at the Meta Connect 2024 conference in October. By December, it became accessible to users in the preliminary evaluation program. Now, with beta testing completed, Meta confirms that the translation feature will soon roll out across all markets where Ray-Ban smart glasses are sold. The feature supports translations between English, French, Italian, and Spanish. Users who wish to use the translator offline will need to download the necessary language packs in advance.
What’s Coming Next and Where It’s Available
Meta also outlined a few upcoming features that are either in development or soon to be available to a wider user base, adds NIX Solutions. The Live AI function—which enables the Meta AI assistant to access what the user is seeing—will soon be generally available in the US and Canada. In addition, users will soon be able to send and receive Instagram messages, photos, and make both audio and video calls through the glasses. While the device lacks a display for reading messages, it does allow for quick sharing of what the user is looking at in real time.
Music streaming support via platforms like Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music will expand to users outside of the US and Canada. However, only users who have English set as their default language will be able to ask the AI assistant to play music or provide information about artists. Meta AI, which has already launched in the UK, will soon be available in all EU countries where the smart glasses are sold. Additionally, Meta plans to bring its smart glasses to new markets, including Mexico, India, and the UAE. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
