On January 19, TikTok may face a ban in the United States, potentially disrupting its short-form video dominance. Competitors, including Instagram, are taking steps to attract users, adding new features to their platforms. Notably, Instagram has introduced updates to the Reels section, inspired by TikTok’s format.
Instagram Reels Gets a Social Boost
The updated Reels section will feature a feed showcasing videos friends have interacted with—whether they’ve liked, commented on, or watched them. Users can now see their friends’ preferences and viewing habits, enhancing social engagement. Additionally, the new Reels feed introduces an option to “start a conversation” with friends based on shared video interests.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explained, “We want Instagram to be not only a place where you consume entertainment but also a place where you communicate through that content with your friends.” This concept is a revival of features previously found in the Activity feed, which was removed several years ago. The updated feed is already live in select countries, with plans for broader rollout, adds NIXSOLUTIONS.
Future of TikTok and Reels
If TikTok is banned in the U.S., app stores will no longer distribute it, leaving a void competitors will strive to fill. Instagram’s proactive approach positions Reels as a strong alternative for creators and users alike. We’ll keep you updated on further developments and how Instagram continues to adapt in the face of these changes.
