TikTok, a short-video platform owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is laying off hundreds of employees worldwide. According to Reuters, these layoffs are part of efforts to improve content moderation by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.
Layoffs Confirmed in Malaysia with Future Cuts Planned
The report states that over 700 employees in Malaysia have already lost their jobs. However, TikTok clarified that fewer than 500 individuals were affected. The dismissed employees were primarily involved in content moderation and were informed of the layoffs via email on October 9.
A source familiar with the situation noted that TikTok plans to implement additional layoffs next month to streamline and consolidate its regional operations. A company representative confirmed the restructuring, stating, “We are making these changes as part of our ongoing efforts to further improve our global content moderation operating model.”
AI-Powered Moderation and Future Investments
TikTok currently employs about 110,000 people across more than 20 cities worldwide, notes NIXsolutions. To ensure content complies with platform rules, the company uses both human moderators and AI algorithms. This year, TikTok aims to invest $2 billion to enhance the platform’s security, which includes improving moderation processes. Presently, 80% of content that violates the platform’s rules is automatically removed by AI systems.
